How to know your narcissistic ex isn't over you

Sep 28, 2026 ¡ 1 min read

How to know your narcissistic ex isn’t over you OR what they did to cause the breakup:

They smear campaign and slander you.

Because projection is the narcissist’s M.O.

People think being “over” someone means they don’t want them back anymore. But there’s another thing a person can remain deeply attached to:

The need to escape what the relationship revealed about them.

If they betrayed you, neglected you, abused you, abandoned their responsibilities, destroyed the relationship, or repeatedly behaved in ways that ultimately cost them access to you, the breakup becomes evidence of cause and effect.

And instead of sitting with:

“I did things that contributed to losing this person.”

They project.

Now YOU abandoned them.

YOU were impossible to love.

YOU were toxic.

YOU ruined the family.

YOU were selfish.

YOU were the problem all along.

And that’s why some narcissistic exes will smear campaign you YEARS after the relationship has ended.

At that point, they’re not even arguing with you anymore.

They’re arguing with the meaning of what happened.

They need an audience to cosign the projection because every person who believes their rewritten version of events helps reinforce the reality they would rather live in:

“I didn’t lose this relationship because of my behavior. I escaped a terrible person.”

That’s why the smear campaign can continue long after you’ve stopped engaging.

You moved on from the relationship.

They’re still trying to move on from the truth about why it ended.

And projection gives them somewhere else to put the shame.

So sometimes the clearest sign that your narcissistic ex still hasn’t processed the breakup isn’t that they’re calling you begging to come back.

It’s that years later, they still need you to be the villain in order for them to remain the hero of their own story.
