Why a smear campaign is a gold mine in a legal battle

Sep 29, 2026 · 2 min read

If you’re in a legal battle with a narcissist or preparing for one, the BEST thing they can do to you is smear campaign you.

Seriously.

It’s a GOLD MINE for documenting inconsistencies, contradictions, admissions, shifting stories, timelines and outright lies.

And eventually, when you’ve healed enough, it can also be a good laugh.

One thing we have to remember as survivors is that shame is for the wicked.

You do not have to accept shame for somebody else’s behavior.

A smear campaign is often an attempt to transfer shame. They take what they cannot tolerate confronting within themselves and construct a story where YOU are the embarrassing one. YOU are the unstable one. YOU are the irresponsible one. YOU are the problem.

Remember that childhood rhyme?

“I’m rubber, you’re glue. Whatever you say to me bounces off of me and sticks to you.”

That is exactly what laughter can begin to do to narcissistic abuse.

Because once you can SEE the projection, you don’t have to absorb it anymore.

You start listening differently.

Instead of:

“OMG. How could he SAY that about me?”

It becomes:

“Interesting. Let me screenshot that.”

😂

Because now you’re not sitting there swallowing somebody else’s shame. You’re observing.

You’re documenting.

You’re comparing yesterday’s story to today’s story.

You’re putting dates next to statements.

You’re preserving posts.

You’re comparing public claims to private text messages.

You’re comparing what they SAY they did with what the records show they actually did.

And suddenly the smear campaign that was supposed to destroy your credibility becomes a running archive of THEIR credibility.

That’s the irony.

Jealousy. Resentment. Projection. Shame. Remorse that never progressed into repentance, accountability, repair or changed behavior, so it became maladaptive.

Instead of:

“I did something wrong. I need to make this right.”

It becomes:

“I need everyone to believe YOU are wrong so I don’t have to confront what I did.”

And once you understand that dynamic, the smear campaign loses a tremendous amount of its psychological power.

You stop running behind every lie trying to clean up your reputation.

You stop auditioning for innocence.

You stop desperately trying to convince every flying monkey that you’re a good person.

You collect the receipt.

You put it in the folder.

And sometimes?

You laugh.

Because laughter says:

You cannot hand me your shame anymore.

I know who I am.

I know what happened.

And fortunately for me, you keep documenting your version of events publicly. 😂
