Narcissists are not as smart as they think they are

Narcissists are NOT as smart as they think they are.

They fantasize about being smarter than everyone around them for so long that eventually, they begin treating the fantasy like a fact.

But so much of narcissistic behavior is actually compensation for what they lack, especially emotional intelligence.

And that deficit matters because almost everything involving other human beings requires emotional intelligence: conflict, intimacy, parenting, accountability, communication, negotiation, empathy, self-awareness, repair.

That’s why their lies can become almost comically incoherent.

They’ll tell Lie #1 to protect their ego.

Then reality contradicts Lie #1, so they invent Lie #2 to explain the contradiction.

Then somebody notices Lie #2 doesn’t match Lie #1, so now they need Lie #3.

Then they have to rewrite what they “actually meant,” change the timeline, omit a detail, introduce a new villain, claim you misunderstood them, or pretend they never said what they very clearly said.

It becomes a toddler standing next to a broken lamp with the baseball still in his hand, explaining with complete confidence that the lamp actually broke itself.

That isn’t intellectual brilliance.

That’s emotional immaturity trying to perform intellectual superiority.

And this is exactly why narcissistic people often trip over their own narratives.

They may be skilled at manipulation. They may be socially charming. They may understand what gets a reaction out of people. They may even be highly intelligent in other areas.

But manipulation is not the same thing as emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence requires the ability to tolerate uncomfortable truths about yourself without immediately needing to distort reality to protect your ego.

And THAT is where the whole performance starts falling apart.

Because every new lie creates another fact they have to remember.

Every rewritten story creates another contradiction.

Every smear campaign creates another public statement that can eventually be compared against texts, dates, documents, witnesses, behavior, and their own previous words.

They think they are building an airtight narrative.

Meanwhile, they are building an evidence trail.

The lie keeps requiring maintenance.

The truth doesn’t.
